By Peter Hadfield in Tokyo JAPAN looks set to join Europe in insisting that genetically modified food from the US is labelled. A draft plan by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries recommends labelling food that contains proteins and genes not found in unmodified agricultural products. The plan also calls for labelling food that has not itself been modified but contains traces of other modified foods. “The recommendation is that it should be flexible, so that new foods could be recategorised as new information or technology becomes available,” says Kaoru Yoshimura, director of the ministry’s standards and labelling division. At present, the new classification is limited by technology. Products in which genetically modified ingredients may be present but cannot be detected will not be labelled, including rapeseed and potatoes. And although soya beans and corn are on the target list, processed foods containing these products—such as soy sauce and corn oil—will have to be exempt, as genetic modifications cannot be detected after these crops have been heated and processed. Yoshimura says Japan’s approach also differs from that of Europe because the safety of engineered foods is not at issue. Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare has already tested and approved the existing foods. “Many food labels are not based on safety, but they are disclosing ingredients for consumer choice,
